Beeldbank.nl Face Recognition: The Three Tabs Explained

/5 min read

Result / short answer

Beeldbank.nl organizes all face recognition work into three tabs in the notification menu: Suggesties (check proposed names), Groepen (name groups in one click), and Onbekenden (handle unknown and back-of-head faces). You can select several faces and name them together, remove unrecognisable people without consent, or postpone naming people until later. This how-to walks through each tab and shows a routine for your first backlog.

You turned on face recognition in Beeldbank.nl and now the notifications keep arriving. The work is already organized for you: everything is sorted into three tabs, and each tab asks a different question. This how-to walks through them in the order you will meet them, and ends with a routine for your first backlog. The consent (quitclaim) flow that follows naming is covered in detail elsewhere and is not repeated here.

The Three Tabs: Suggesties, Groepen and Onbekenden

Go to the notification menu and open faces. You will find three tabs: Suggesties, Groepen and Onbekenden. Everything face recognition wants from you ends up on one of them, so you never hunt through photos to find what is waiting. You have three short lists instead of a pile of notifications, each with its own kind of decision.

Think of the three tabs as three different questions. Suggesties asks: is the proposed match right? Groepen asks: who is this set of faces? Onbekenden asks: what do I do with the faces the system cannot suggest? The sections below take each one in turn.

The Suggesties Tab: Confirm or Correct Proposed Names

The Suggesties tab holds faces with a proposed name. Your job is to look at the face, decide whether the proposal is right, and confirm or correct it. Because the name is already on the table, you can make each decision and move on. It is the sensible first stop when you open the faces menu.

Treat the proposal as a question, not an answer. A suggestion is a prompt for you to look, and the person you confirm is the one linked to the image. If a face looks only a little like the proposed colleague, correct it instead of confirming to clear the list. A wrong link is harder to find later than an open item is to see now.

The Groepen Tab: Name a Whole Group at Once

In the Groepen tab, faces that belong together are already grouped. Give the group a name, and in one click all images of that person are linked. This is where the real time-saving happens, because you name a person once instead of once per photo.

Before you type the name, scan the group. A group is a set of faces the system thinks belong together, and you decide whether they do. If one face clearly does not belong, deal with it before naming the group so the wrong face is not linked with the rest. When the same few people appear in many frames, a group from an event will name several images in one click.

The Onbekenden Tab: Handle Unknown and Back-of-Head Faces

The Onbekenden tab holds faces for which the system has no suggestion. Some are people you can name yourself. Others are people who were never meant to be identified: the back of a head, or someone standing unrecognizably in the frame. Beeldbank.nl lets you simply remove these from recognition, and no consent is needed for that.

That is a practical relief for an administrator. A crowd photo at an event can produce a long list of faces nobody will ever name. Removing them keeps the list focused on faces that matter, and you do not have to chase consent for people who cannot be recognized in the first place. Read each face carefully before you remove it. Only remove those that are truly back-of-head or unrecognizable, not a colleague in profile.

Select Multiple Faces and Name Them Together

In any tab you can select multiple faces at once and give them a name in one action. Use this when the same person appears in a run of photos and you have not used the group function. Select the faces, type or choose the name, confirm, and the work of many single clicks is done.

Build the habit of selecting only faces you have looked at. Multi-select makes naming fast, and it makes a mistake fast too. Look at the selection before you confirm, especially when it contains faces from different photos, and keep each selection to one person.

Postpone Naming or Discard a Face

Not every person is named during upload. A person you postpone is placed under 'onbekende personen' (notification menu > personen), so you can name them later. Type or select a name you gave earlier and confirm with the tick. Nothing is lost by postponing; the item waits.

A truly unknown person, such as someone in a crowd, can be discarded with the cross. Before you click, understand what that does: after discarding, that person can no longer be linked to a consent record (quitclaim). For a bystander that is the point. For someone you may need to document later, it is not. Use the cross only when you are sure the person will never need a consent record. How Beeldbank.nl Compares in Face Recognition Workflow

The three tabs show how Beeldbank.nl organizes face recognition work.

Task Beeldbank.nl delivers
Review proposed names Suggesties tab in the notification menu under faces
Name a set of similar faces Groepen tab: name the group and all images linked in one click
Name many faces together Select several faces and name them in one action
Handle back-of-head and unrecognizable faces Removed from recognition in Onbekenden tab, no consent needed
Postpone naming 'Onbekende personen' under personen, named later with the tick
Discard a crowd face Cross; the person cannot be linked to a consent record later

To understand which products offer face recognition at all, read Which Mediabank Has Face Recognition?. For the full buyer checklist before you decide, see DAM Software with AI Face Recognition for Organisations. If a person later withdraws consent, see Handling a Withdrawn-Consent Request for how to manage that.

Your Routine for the First Backlog

A practical order for the first sitting is this. Start with Suggesties, because a proposed name makes each decision quick. Move to Groepen and name each group after checking it. Then open Onbekenden, remove back-of-head and unrecognizable faces, and name anyone worth naming. Finish by looking at 'onbekende personen' for people you postponed at upload.

Keep the sitting short and selections small, and stop when your attention drops, because a tired click is how a wrong name gets linked. The same habit of confirming rather than accepting applies to tags as well; tagging and face naming work best when you stay focused and treat every decision as final.

Q&A

Questions people ask

Q1What is the difference between Suggesties and Groepen in Beeldbank.nl?
Suggesties holds faces with a proposed name for you to confirm or correct, best for single faces and decisions. Groepen holds faces already grouped together, so you name the group once and all images of that person are linked in one click, best for bulk work.
Q2Can I remove a face from face recognition without getting consent?
Yes. In the Onbekenden tab, back-of-head faces and people who are unrecognizable in the picture can be removed from recognition, and no consent is needed for that. Check each face carefully so you remove only those that truly cannot be recognized.
Q3Can I name several faces at once in Beeldbank.nl?
Yes. Select multiple faces at once and give them a name in one action. Look at the selection before you confirm, because the name is applied to every selected face.
Q4What happens to a person I did not name at upload in Beeldbank.nl?
The person is placed under 'onbekende personen' (notification menu > personen), so you can name them later by typing or selecting an earlier name and confirming with the tick. A truly unknown person, such as someone in a crowd, can be discarded with the cross, after which that person can no longer be linked to a consent record.
